T Cell Receptor (TCR) Therapy

T Cell Receptor (TCR) Therapy: A Simple Guide to Targeting Cancer from Within

What Is TCR Therapy?

T Cell Receptor (TCR) Therapy is a personalized immunotherapy that engineers your own T cells to recognize and destroy cancer cells—including those hiding inside the tumor.
Think of it as giving your immune system special glasses that let it see cancer cells that were previously invisible.

How Is TCR Different from Other Immunotherapies?

Therapy

What It Targets

Best For

TCR Therapy

Proteins inside cancer cells

Solid tumors (sarcoma, melanoma, lung, etc.)

CAR-T Therapy

Proteins on the surface of cancer cells

Blood cancers (leukemia, lymphoma)

NK Cell Therapy

Broad recognition of cancer

Solid tumors and blood cancers

The key advantage: Up to 90% of cancer proteins are inside cells. TCR can see them. CAR-T cannot.

How TCR Therapy Works: A Simple Analogy

Imagine every cell has a window (called HLA) that shows a small sample of what’s inside. Cancer cells show cancer proteins through this window.

TCR therapy gives your T cells special binoculars that can look through this window and recognize: “That’s cancer—attack!”

The Therapy Process in 5 Steps

Step

What Happens

1. Testing

A blood test checks if you have the right HLA type (the “window”) and if your cancer has the target protein

2. Collection

Your T cells are collected through apheresis—similar to donating blood

3. Engineering

In the lab, scientists add a special receptor (TCR) that recognizes your cancer’s unique protein

4. Expansion

The engineered T cells are multiplied into billions of cancer-fighting soldiers

5. Infusion

The cells are given back to you through an IV—they travel throughout your body, hunting and destroying cancer

What Happens Inside Your Body

Once infused, your engineered T cells:

✅ Travel to tumor sites
✅ Recognize cancer cells through the HLA “window”
✅ Attack and destroy cancer cells
✅ Continue circulating to find and kill any remaining cancer
✅ May provide long-term immune surveillance

Key Advantages of TCR Therapy

Sees Inside Cells – Targets proteins hidden inside cancer cells (up to 90% of all cancer proteins)
Effective for Solid Tumors – Works where CAR-T often struggles
Broad Target Range – Can be designed for many different cancer types
Long-Term Protection – Engineered T cells persist in the body
Minimal Side Effects – When compared to chemotherapy
Can Combine with Other Treatments – Works alongside checkpoint inhibitors, targeted therapy, and more

What Are the Side Effects?

You’ll be monitored closely by experienced medical teams. Possible side effects include:

  • Fever and chills
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Low blood counts
  • Cytokine Release Syndrome (CRS) – a temporary immune response that is manageable with proper care

Most side effects are temporary and can be treated.

Who Is a Candidate?

TCR therapy may be right for you if:

✅ You have a solid tumor (sarcoma, melanoma, lung, ovarian, etc.)
✅ Your cancer has a specific target protein (MAGE-A4, NY-ESO-1, PRAME, etc.)
✅ You have the correct HLA type (determined by a simple blood test)
✅ Chemotherapy or other treatments have stopped working
✅ You’re seeking a personalized, targeted approach
